Nokia 6120 Classic in Ubuntu linux as Modem

I searched the compatibility my Nokia 6120 classic as modem in Linux and found the nice tutorial at forum ubuntu Malaysia. That tutorial explain how to connect to the internet using Nokia 6120 classic as modem (USB cable interface) via terminal program called wvdial in Ubuntu Linux 8.04. After read the tutorial, i installed Ubuntu 7.04 in my PC and then followed the tutorial step by step and finally my nokia 6120 classic successfully connected to the internet using Telkomsel Flash, a broadband internet connection provided by Telkomsel.
There is small different between setting Telkomsel Flash in Windows and in Linux. In windows, i can use nokia PC suit with only set the APN into flash and without the username and password. But in wvdial ubuntu linux, i can not connect if i set wvdial without the username and password. So i try change the username into flash and passwords into flash, and successfully connect to the internet which indicate by opening page http://flash.telkomsel.com/id/HalamanUtama.php

This is my wvdial.conf configuration :

[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
0Baud = 460800
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = *99#
Username = flash
Password = flash
Stupid Mode = 1

I don’t know if this wvdial configuration is correct or not for Telkomsel Flash connection, i just try and successfully connected. :)

New Update :

wvdial.conf can be set like this :

[Dialer Defaults]

Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
0Baud = 460800
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1, “IP”, “flash”
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = *99#
Username = ”
Password = ”
Stupid Mode = 1

    Hi All,

    Bellow please find the detail step by step of the configuration

    Connect your phone via data cable
    open terminal & type

    lsusb

    now u will get the following output

    andhy@gate-desktop:~$ lsusb

    Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0421:0445 Nokia Mobile Phones
    Bus 001 Device 002: ID 046d:092f Logitech, Inc.
    Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    andhy@gate-desktop:~$

    Now note the line in which Nokia Mobile Phones is written. It has two number one is 0421 & other is 0445.
    we’ll take these numbers as 0×421 & 0×445
    0421 is the Vendor ID & 0445 is the Product ID

    Now enter this command.
    sudo /sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x(vid) product=0x(pid)

    eg, in my case:::
    sudo /sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0×421 product=0×445

    Now enter this command to create wvdial.conf file

    wvdialconf create

    you’ll get a long output which will be like

    Scanning your serial ports for a modem.
    Port Scan: S0 S1 S2 S3
    WvModem: Cannot get information for serial port.
    ttyACM0: ATQ0 V1 E1 — OK
    ttyACM0: ATQ0 V1 E1 Z — OK
    ttyACM0: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 — OK
    ttyACM0: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 — OK
    ttyACM0: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 — OK
    ttyACM0: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 — OK
    ttyACM0: Modem Identifier: ATI — Nokia
    ttyACM0: Speed 4800: AT — OK
    ttyACM0: Speed 9600: AT — OK
    ttyACM0: Speed 19200: AT — OK
    ttyACM0: Speed 38400: AT — OK
    ttyACM0: Speed 57600: AT — OK
    ttyACM0: Speed 115200: AT — OK
    ttyACM0: Speed 230400: AT — OK
    ttyACM0: Speed 460800: AT — OK
    ttyACM0: Max speed is 460800; that should be safe.
    ttyACM0: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 — OK
    Found an USB modem on /dev/ttyACM0
    Modem configuration written to create.
    ttyACM0: Speed 460800; init “ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0?

    Now.. notice the output says that there is a modem at /dev/ttyACM0 & max speed is 460800

    now enter this command to edit wvdial.conf file

    sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf

    A file will open in gedit text editor. Now delete everything in that file & paste the following there
    Note : flash is my APN

    [Dialer Defaults]

    Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
    0Baud = 460800
    Init1 = ATZ
    Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1, “IP”, “flash”
    ISDN = 0
    Modem Type = Analog Modem
    Phone = *99#
    Username = ”
    Password = ”
    Stupid Mode = 1

    save the file & you are done

    Now whenever u need to connect. Open terminal & type wvdial,,wait till some sort of IP address is displayed.

    hit cntrl+c to disconnect.

    Mas,saya coba pakai indosat matrix punya..Pas coba connect,terakhirnya tampil disconnected on ….. Kenapa ya mas kira2??Thx…

    Mungkin bisa di check APN nya apakah sudah benar, termasuk user dan passwordnya (aku ga tau apakah matrix pake user & password)

    Terus coba dilihat disconetcednya karena apa biasanya muncul di terminalnya.

    kalo conect, harusnya muncul misalnya seperti ini :

    pppd: ?[06][06][08]` [06][08]

    primary DNS address 218.248.240.135

    pppd: ?[06][06][08]` [06][08]

    secondary DNS address 218.248.240.79

    pppd: ?[06][06][08]` [06][08]

    Mas,pake ubuntu 8.10 ga perlu modprobe lagi..Bisa langsung pakai buat internet,cuma perlu rubah apn,username ma pwd..Ada pilihan operator di indo…

    Bro.. I have bought nokia 6120classic. I want to use it as a modem in ubuntu 8.04. Actually I have used it as a modem in my windows. and I am rather doubt whether this handphone can be used as a modem for a long time or not, coz i found it very hot when it is used as a modem.     @ rowel,

    Well, actually i also found that the temperature of my 6120C turn into little hot when i used it as modem for long period of usage.
    Therefore i put my 6120C in the floor for cooling it :D

    The main configuration of wvdial.conf for IM3 is the same with the configuration which was wrote in this blog. The difference is only in APN and maybe in user and password.
    As i am not IM3 user, i don’t know the APN, user and password for IM3 exactly. Maybe the configuration is like bellow, but i can not say for sure and also can not guarantee whether it will work or not.

    [Dialer Defaults]

    Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
    0Baud = 460800
    Init1 = ATZ
    Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

    I’ve not tried to increase Baud rate. Does it have any impact for the connection bit rate?
